Myth #2: About Choosing a College

“Future employers and graduate schools give an edge to those who have degrees from prestigious universities”

Steven says not necessarily. So many graduate schools have improved their quality of education and have distinguished themselves that employers and graduate school admissions staffs can no longer rely on just the name of a school as a factor for selection.

Steven goes on to say that wise students are matching themselves to colleges within which they have the potential to make good grades and contribute positively to campus life and that after graduation a person’s own qualities will decide whether he/she gets a raise. Look for Myth #3…..Read more

THIRTEEN MYTHS ABOUT CHOOSING A COLLEGE

Just read a wonderful book by Steven Antonoff and here are some high lights that I will let you know one myth at a time, so stay tuned for all 13 myths

Myth #1 “Colleges are either good or bad”

Not true says Steven, the key is not to look at colleges as good or bad but to look at them as ” Is X  a college good for me?”

He also says its equally inaccurate to say, “If I don’t recognize the college name, it’s probably not a good school”

The best colleges are not all in the East, so you should not have any preconceived notions when you start your college search. Clear you mind and begin fresh.  He says you want to guard against relying on stereotypes in looking for colleges. You also do not want to just rely on word of  mouth; just because someone went to Stanford and loved it, does not mean you will love it to. It may have been the right-fit for that person, but you are different, with different likes, dislikes, ideas, and beliefs, etc.  Stay tuned for Myth #2…..

IECA Summer Training Institute at Swarthmore College, Penn. in July

Spent a week in Philly learning all about Embracing Your Inner Entrepreneur as Independent Educational Consultant.  The workshop involved, Trends in the Education Profession, information on why families hire Independent Consultants and Starting up your own practice.  There was so much to learn and I came back with chalk full of knowledge.  While in Philly and New Jersey, I also saw the Liberty Bell, where Ben Franklin was buried, Betsy Ross’s house and Independence Hall.

I  got a chance to tour many college campus’s such as : Drexel University, Swarthmore College, Univ. Penn,Rutgers College,Camden University and Princeton University.

Look for next blog on information about each institution.
