St. John’s College
St. John’s College is located on two different campuses. One location is in Annapolis, Maryland which was chartered in 1784 and the other is in Santa Fe, New Mexico which was established in 1964. Despite its name, St. John’s College has no religious affiliation whatsoever and is centered on reading and discussing the great books of Western civilization, across the spectrum of human thought.
How Are The Faculty And Academics?
With interdisciplinary classes that are fewer than 19 students St. John’s students, or better known as “Johnnies,” are original and unconventional, love big questions and discussion, and debate the establishment by challenging the renowned thinkers, authors, scientists, philosophers, musicians, mathematicians, politicians, and more who have changed our world today. At St. John, faculty members are called “tutors” to avoid having ranks and the title “professor” is not ever used, even though most faculty are experts in their respective fields. At St. John’s College, the students follow a cohesive course that trains them on how to become more precise and effective speakers, listeners, and writers and at the end of the semester they meet with their tutors for an oral evaluation called the Don Rag, during which they are evaluated based upon their classroom participation and essay writing.

Johnnies are so into their college careers that it has been said that even when they’re participating in other non-academic activities you can still hear them talk about what they have been reading to their piers. Both campuses are small communities with most students living on campus centering their life on their studies. The Annapolis campus is at the center of the historic capital of Maryland and The Santa Fe campus is nestled among the mountains of the southwest in the outdoors. Both campuses offer many activities such as music, theater, athletics, and so much more that is relevant to their locations.

St. John’s College does not have a minimum GPA requirement nor are the standardized test scores the reason for admission. The main focus for a St. John’s College applicant is the admission essay supported by the secondary school record and recommendations.
